JD Sports has debuted in the Middle East with the first of 50 stores opening across the region, beginning at Bahrain’s beachfront shopping destination, Marassi Galleria Mall.

Under a 10-year franchise agreement with GMG, locations under the JD brand will open over the next three years in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Egypt.

The first Bahrain stores measures 5,422 sq ft store and features key brands across its global sports and footwear offer.

Chris Rowan, JD international franchise director, said: “This is a further milestone in our international expansion strategy and we are delighted to be working with GMG, one of the Middle East’s most respected companies, as we continue to bring JD’s distinctive offering to more customers globally.”

It added that the partnership with GMG, which was announced last July, will enable it to deliver on the rollout of its ‘JD Brand First’ strategy as it continues to expand into new markets.

GMG president for sports Carl Masterman added: “We have collectively witnessed the buzz and demand that JD, The King of Trainers, has generated, inspiring the emerging generation of globally minded consumers through the universal culture of sport, music and fashion. The brand’s arrival promises an exhilarating journey ahead.”

The latest regional move maintains JD’s impressive expansion plans by both acquisition, franchise and own-store development. There have also been a number of recent key store upgrades, including Westfield Stratford in east London and Hammerson’s Dundrum Town Centre in Dublin, Ireland.

Last month, the retail giant announced the proposed acquisition of North America’s Hibbett for $1.109 billion (£899 million), potentially adding 1,169 stores in 36 states across the US to its portfolio.

At the time, the company said the deal is in line with its strategic priorities and is “a very important transaction for our strategic and financial development”.
