With the key back-to-school season looming, M&S is offering parents money off children’s clothing in exchange for donated school uniforms, in a bid to help struggling families amid the cost-of-living crisis.
It’s linking up with long-time sustainability partner Oxfam and has now added eBay to complete a united front on the venture.
Second-hand uniforms collected by the high street retail giant will be sold via Oxfam’s high street stores as well as via a new back-to-school eBay shop.
The Oxfam tie-up is an extension of M&S’s ‘shwopping’ partnership where customers drop off old clothing in exchange for Sparks loyalty card advantages.
And by working with eBay for the first time, it’s hoped more families would be able to access affordable school uniforms wherever they live or however they choose to shop, M&S said.
From this week, dedicated school uniform ‘shwop’ boxes are installed in the kidswear departments of more than 200 M&S branches.
Customers can donate any item of school uniform, from any retailer, including those with school badges. The only request is the clothing be of at least “hand-me-down quality”.
Those who take part receive a 20% off selected kids’ ranges voucher via M&S’s Sparks loyalty card. Any profits go to Oxfam.
Lorna Fallon, Oxfam’s retail director, described the scheme as a “win-win… donating pre-loved school uniforms is not only better for the environment, since it gives garments a longer lifecycle, it also raises funds for Oxfam and it helps parents here in the UK who may be struggling with the cost of kitting their children out for school.”
M&S, which is the market leader selling nearly 7 million pieces of school uniform a year, noted it hasn't increased its prices since 2025.
On Tuesday, supermarkets giant Sainsbury’s also said it was freezing its school uniform prices at 2025 levels this year.
