Older women are embracing the kind of swimwear that was once the preserve of the young, Clearpay data is showing, with the trend driving bikini sales higher.

The BNPL specialist said bikini sales have risen 59% year on year in 2025 and that Baby Boomers (those born from 1944 to 1964) are a big part of that. In fact, they’re switching on to string bikinis at a higher rate than any other generation — even surpassing Gen Z — with a 245% increase in sales year on year. Gen Z saw a much smaller 21% rise.

Clearpay also noticed a 17% increase in sales of one-piece swimming costumes, with Baby Boomers again seeing the biggest jump at 48%.

The increase in sales of such products to older consumers is said to be a sign of rising body confidence and is being helped by celebrity endorsement.

Sharon Stone, aged 65, recently shared a mirror selfie sporting a green leopard print bikini, and Clearpay also cited the latest Sports Illustrated cover featuring 81-year-old Martha Stewart in a swimsuit.

Looking at the overall figures, we’ve already seen how Boomers are diving deep into stringkinis. And as mentioned, bikini sales to Boomers have risen 59% this year while rising a smaller 35% and 17% among Gen X and Gen Y (Millennials), and falling 8% among Gen Z.

For cutout-style swimwear, Boomer sales are 87% higher, with Gen X up 36%, Gen Y up 34% and Gen Z up 6%.

High-waisted styles have risen 87% among Boomers, 36% among Gen X and 20% among Gen Y. But Gen Z sales are down 9%.

The low bikini has seen its sales rising strongly among all age groups with sales to Boomers 188% higher, Gen X up 176%, Gen Y up 174% and Gen Z up a massive 244%.

And that 17% one-piece swimsuit rise breaks down into a 48% among Boomers, 26% among Gen X, 16% among Gen Y and 6% for Gen Z.

Clearpay’s in-house Fashion Psychologist Shakaila Forbes-Bell said: “Qualitative studies have found that Baby Boomers reported experiencing radical acceptance regarding their body image as they aged, with some research indicating that 46 is the age we officially stop caring about what others think.

“Martha Stewart’s breathtaking swimsuit shot acts like a beacon, demonstrating to this generation that beauty standards are evolving and expanding and that Baby Boomers are part of this more inclusive standard.”
