Fast Retailing’s Uniqlo had a fairly good trading month in June with the company saying that comparable sales at its 737 stores in Japan rose 4.1%. The boost to its turnover came as it put marketing support behind key products such as ‘wireless’ bras designed for comfort as well as support, and its Kando trousers and shorts that look smart but have plenty of comfort stretch, as well as quick-drying properties making them ultra-easy-care.

It all added up to a chain that depends heavily on technical innovation but keeps the technology low-key and ensures it always takes a back seat to the overall look and feel of the garments.

The approach certainly seems to be appealing to customers at present, which is good news after Uniqlo’s revenues rose by 0.9% globally in the first half and a weaker 0.3% in its domestic Japanese market.

It was also good news compared to the previous month. Comparable sales in May had risen only 2.4% but June enjoyed the uplift as the number of visitors to its stores rose a strong 8.2%. This was the fifth month in succession that footfall has been rising. However, there always has to be some bad news and transaction values dropped for the fourth month in a row, falling by 4%.

Alongside June’s 4.1% comps rise, the company also reported a 2.7% total sales rise (excluding online) at the firm’s 793 directly-run locations. Meanwhile with online included, turnover was up 3.8%.

Shareholders seemed happy and the company’s shares rose as a result of the news.
