September 2, 2025 20:04On October 1-6, the Science Week science festival will be held for the first time in Armenia, the theme of which is Bringing Science Closer to Society. Within the framework of the program titled “Did you know?” Lilit Margaryan, coordinator of the activities of the Gituzh initiative, the organizer of the event, said that the goal of the event is to contribute to the popularization of science in the country.
The Science Week will consist of two parts. The main event will take place in Yerevan's Freedom Square and will last six days. Parallel to that, decentralized events will be held in kindergartens and schools throughout Armenia. The organizers intend to involve universities in these events as well.
The main event
The event to be held in Freedom Square is divided into three thematic groups. The theme of the first two days will be "Science is everywhere". During these days, scientific institutes, research companies, through discussions, scientific experiments, question-and-answer sessions, games, installations, will present what activities they carry out, what products they have and what problems they solve, who works for them and what opportunities are available for young people.
"Scientific knowledge is a norm for us, but it came from science. If we look at our surroundings, almost everything came from science. And if we want to solve the problems in the future or have answers to some questions, then we must have competitive scientists, science, which will continue the development process in Armenia," says Lilit Margaryan, noting that all competitive scientific institutes which operate in the country will be represented.
The second block, which will take place on October 3-4 and is called "Future scientists", aims to help young people in professional orientation. Scientific institutes, universities, and foundations operating in Armenia will participate in this series of events, showing in which directions science works in Armenia, what opportunities exist, etc.
The third block, which will take place on October 5-6, will be entirely dedicated to science fiction and aims to develop this field. "We have talented young people, and we need to create platforms for them to develop their minds, interact with their friends, create communities, platforms where they can engage in science fiction and develop," he said.
Within the framework of the event, competitions for short stories and comics of the science fiction genre were announced, the main characters of which will be a scientist or an engineer. The authors of the best works will receive prizes.
According to Lilit Margaryan, the events are not only for young people, they are also intended for adults. The role of science and technology in general is very big, and everyone should understand that if we want to have a developed country, a competitive economy, then we must also have competitive science, and introduce that scientific knowledge into society.
Events in kindergartens
According to Lilit Margaryan, they decided to hold events in kindergartens, because the process of getting to know the world is quite active among children at this age, as evidenced by the fact that it is at this age that children ask various questions about the world around them.
"Games, illustrations will be held in kindergartens. Fifteen events have been developed, during which children can interact with various scientific methods and see how science works through games, small experiments, and illustrations," she said.
Preparations and partners
Preparations for this event began about 1.5 years ago. They studied the international experience, developed a clear methodology, conducted focus groups, were in contact with different scientists, developed different formats of science popularization and involved partners. Now they are summarizing and finishing the organizational work.
Lilit Margaryan notes that they have supporters, partners and participants to organize the event. Among the concrete participants are scientific institutes, universities, research companies, foundations and organizations that have a great contribution in the field of education.
They also have partners, for example, the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Committee of Higher Education and Science, the Municipality of Yerevan, the National Academy of Sciences, as well as sponsoring companies, Team Telecom Armenia, which also the partner of the interview series related to technological and scientific fields titled "Did you know?", the Hovnanyan Family Foundation, Ucraft, etc. The main sponsor of the event is Fastex.
