Peter Cowgill — the ex head of JD Sports — could be set to make a fashion comeback with a report that he might get involved in a private equity buyout of Mainline Menswear.

The high-end business is currently owned by JD Sports, but the fast-growing firm is understood to be looking at selling it and is currently sounding out potential buyers as JD continues its focus on building its core sports retail business in the UK and abroad.
That's according to the Telegraph, which said that both private equity and trade bidders are understood to be interested in buying the menswear business, with the private equity players keen for the former JD sports CEO to be involved.
The newspaper added that Stuart Hicks, a former footballer who founded Mainline Menswear, has also been approached about managing the company if a buyout happens.
That said, any discussions are believed to be at a very early stage with sources, telling the Telegraph that the retail giant has only just started fielding interest from potential bidders. It hasn't commented on the story.
The company bought its majority stake in Mainline – which sells a variety of high-end brands – almost 10 years ago, with Cowgill saying back then that it was a great business and JD sports would give it more financial stability and strength.
In the ensuing period, its revenues have risen from £8 million in 2025 up to £66 million in the most recent financial year for which it has filed accounts.
Cowgill stepped down from his leadership role at JD Sports around a year-and-a-half ago after questions over its corporate governance, having run the business for 18 years. He remains a consultant for the company and his multimillion pound exit package prevents him from advising any of its rivals.
Were he to take on a role at Mainline, that wouldn't tread on JD Sports’ toes as the focus of the two businesses is very different.
