ASVOFF (the acronym of "a shaded view on fashion film") is a festival created by US journalist and designer Diane Pernet in 2008, featuring documentaries, performances and cutting-edge content at the intersection between fashion and cinema. With its plethora of multi-disciplinary short films dedicated to the world of fashion and its players, ASVOFF’s latest edition will be held in Paris on November 10-13. Once again, the venue will be the Hôtel de Coulanges, a historic mansion located at 35-37 rue des Francs-Bourgeois in the Marais district in central Paris, now also home to Comme des Garçons.

Actress and Chanel brand ambassador Caroline de Maigret will be president of the jury, and French designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac will be honorary president. This year, ASVOFF is paying a special tribute to de Castelbajac, with a retrospective documentary on his career and his passion for collaborations. The other jury members will be fashion and interior designer José Levy, the director of visual image of Comme des Garçons Andrew Taylor Parr, musician Jay-Jay Johansen, producer of "The House of Cardin" documentary Cori Coppola and Miguel Villalobos, a New York-based multidisciplinary artist.

The festival's programme is busy and intense, and will open on November 10 with a documentary produced by Franco-German TV channel Arte. Entitled "Klash! L'art entre acte", it is a mini-series of 20 three-minute episodes, in which Franck Perrin analyses the aesthetics of modern and contemporary art since the 1960s, dwelling on the work of artists like Olafur Eliasson, Ai Weiwei and Orlan.

The festival’s official opening night, on Thursday November 10 at 8 pm CET, will feature the screening of "Boom For Real", a film by US director Sara Driver on the adolescent years of artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, before he came to be world-renowned, and a concert by Swedish trip hop and electronica musician Jay-Jay Johanson.

ASVOFF will pay a fitting tribute to this year’s honorary president and his highly colourful fashion, notably with a short film on his career entitled "L'Epopée pop", and a digital show with 3D animations called "Lego X Jean-Charles de Castelbajac". After the screening, pop art aficionado de Castelbajac will outline his vision of artistic collaborations. As well as a major contemporary art collection, de Castelbajac has to his name a long list of collaborations with ready-to-wear labels like Vilebrequin and Benetton.

The careers of other designers will go on screen at the festival, for example that of Azzedine Alaïa, with a poignant 54-minute documentary entitled "Azzedine Alaïa, a French couturier", directed by French journalist and screenwriter Olivier Nicklaus, charting Alaïa’s journey from his native Tunisia to the Parisian labels with which he honed his craft in the 1960s, before launching his eponymous label.

At the closing ceremony on Sunday November 13, the jury will award 18 prizes to the mini-series and films presented. Among the categories, Chinese short films, responsible fashion, Black Lives Matter culture with "Black Spectrum", and a student prize. The festival will end with a gala evening enlivened by Paris-based DJ and artist Richard Mvogo, better known by the stage name of Richie Reach.
