Retail has changed a lot in recent years and one interesting development is that neither the US nor China featured in the top five markets purchasing from the UK over the last year.

That’s according to the latest research from global DTC e-commerce giant ESW. Instead, it said that international demand for British brands over the last year was driven by cross-border shoppers in the UAE (36% of those who shop from there shop British labels), Australia (28%), South Africa (26%), India (26%) and Spain (23%).

The year before, the US had been joint second in the table with China joint third.

The company’s Global Voices research among more than 18,000 consumers across 18 countries showed that both the US and China were on just 17% last year, and “Spain was the only European market for the second year running, as fragile consumer demand impacted demand in these key global markets”.

ESW’s Chief Revenue Officer Martim Oliveira Avillez said: “Looking ahead to 2025, British brands and retailers again face the prospect of low domestic growth, certainly in the first half of the year at least, and challenging prospects in other key markets internationally across all categories. However, as international demand ebbs and flows, opportunities exist in markets such as the Middle East, India and Asia Pacific – which, our data shows, have been consistently popular markets for UK brands over the past two years.”

It’s interesting that the UK’s top five global markets were also “among the most inclined to utilise Buy-Now, Pay-Later options (India 26%, UAE 24%, Australia 22%), purchase directly from a social channel (India 25%, UAE 22%), or from a virtual store (India and UAE 17% of respondents)”.

And ESW added that younger demographics made up a big chunk of cross-border purchasers from the UK with 21% of 25-34-year-olds, followed by 18% of 35-44 year olds.

Physically distant markets such as Mexico (5%), Brazil (4%), Japan (3%) and Argentina (1%) reported making the fewest purchases from the UK during 2025.

ESW added that beyond the markets already enthusiastically buying British brands there are “significant opportunities”. The research showed “consumers in Brazil and Mexico were amongst the highest indexing markets purchasing clothing, luxury and cosmetics cross-border in 2025, highlighting the opportunity for brands with access to international DTC e-commerce solutions to expand their customer base into these high-demand markets to grow top-line revenue”.
