Researchers at the University of Waterloo have created innovative contact lenses that can continuously deliver drugs to the eyes. The development is described in a study published in the scientific journal ACS Applied Bio Materials.
According to scientists, the new contact lenses will help patients with vision disorders to facilitate treatment and reduce the need for frequent use of eye drops.
To create these lenses, the researchers used a silicone-based hydrogel that hardens when exposed to ultraviolet light.
This material is not only flexible and durable, but also can store and gradually deliver drugs.
Amoxicillin, an antibiotic used to treat eye infections, was used in the respective experiment.
The porous structure of this hydrogel enables to adjust the rate of drug delivery during the entire period of wearing contact lenses, which significantly reduces the risk of errors and frees patients from the need to strictly observe the medication schedule.
Tests have shown that this hydrogel is effective even after one month of storage, while remaining safe for the eyes.
The researchers are confident that their development can be widely used not only in ophthalmology, but also in other fields of biomedicine.
