When Elina said that she wants to represent Armenia, we accepted with great joy. Mrs. Narine, the mother of tennis player Elina Avanesyan, told NEWS.am Sport about this.
Elina Avanesyan, the representative of Armenia, now 49th in the latest Women's Tennis Association (WTA) world rankings, held her second training session in Yerevan Tuesday, which was followed by the tennis player's parents.
The initiative to take now-22-year-old Elina to tennis belongs to her mother, Mrs. Narine.
"Elina has been playing tennis since she was 6 years old. We had already settled in Pyatigorsk, Russia. My oldest son was attending tennis. He was an amateur. Since Elina was small, she was always with me, together we took my son to tennis training. One day I said [to Elina], ‘Do you want to play tennis, too?’ She said, ‘yes.’ That's how she entered the court and did not leave the court from that day. She loved, fell in love with this sport. She has wanted to be like Maria Sharapova since she was a child and she is going towards it with sure steps.
When she was little, she took defeats very hard, she cried. Now she treats defeats more calmly. She knows that if there are defeats, then victory will come.
I am very proud that my daughter is among the top 50 in the world. I have always been proud of her, her willpower," Elina's mother said.
The father of the tennis player, Ararat Avanesyan, says that he is extremely happy with his daughter's decision to play tennis professionally.
"As a father, I am also very proud of Elina's success in tennis, being included in the top 50. Today she is already the 49th, and it is a great honor for me. In fact, at first I was against her taking up tennis, as I knew it would be difficult. But now I regret thinking that way.
I follow her sports career with love, I try to support her, to be at her competitions. I can't attend all of them, but we try to be by her side as much as possible. For example, the last time I attended the Roland-Garros tournament in June, we met there," said Ararat Avanesyan.
"I always accompanied her to tournaments. But since she was 14-15 years old, she went alone. Now I try to attend as many tournaments as possible. Sometimes it turns out that I tell my husband: ‘I left,’” Elina’s mother said—and laughed.
“The results that Elina has achieved and still strives to record are the result of her great and hard work. We only encourage her from the side. She knows that we believe in her and are waiting for her in any situation, be it victory or defeat. She has great aspirations and does everything to achieve the goals set before her. There were also disappointments; it happened that she was tired. But after a few days she gathers herself and returns to the court," added Mrs. Narine.
According to the parents of the tennis player, they are very proud that their daughter expressed her desire to play under the flag of Armenia.
"When Elina said that she wants to represent Armenia, we accepted with great joy. We discussed, then changed the sports citizenship," Elina's mother said.
The father added: "I can't put into words what this step means to me. I am extremely happy that she made this decision and will from now on be playing under Armenia’s flag."
