The curtain rose on the International Festival of Fashion, Photography, and Accessories in Hyères on Thursday evening, setting off in a lively and joyful atmosphere. The founder and general director of what is considered the oldest fashion competition dedicated to young talent, Hyères-born Jean-Pierre Blanc, kicked off this 39th edition by reaffirming his ambition to create a national fashion centre in Hyères next year, just in time for the Festival’s 40th anniversary.

“I hope that this vision will be realised for our 40th anniversary. We are ready for it. It seems like a fair return on the support we have received over the years from various institutions,” he stated, hinting at the organisation of the first masterclasses scheduled for summer 2025. This project, unveiled in January, was launched six months ago in collaboration with local authorities as part of the "France 2030" plan, an initiative backed by a €54 billion investment rolled out over five years and introduced by President Emmanuel Macron at the end of 2025.

“The idea is to create an information hub on fashion professions, with museum-like activities and training programs. It will encompass cultural, educational, and economic aspects, along with a corresponding design hub in Toulon,” explained Jean-Pierre Blanc, highlighting the presence, for the first time at the Hyères Festival, of a showroom dedicated to brands from the region—both commercial and creative.

“We want to make Hyères the fashion capital! This fashion and design hub should also serve as an incubator to foster the birth of new enterprises in these sectors,” added Jean-Pierre Giran, the mayor of Hyères and president of the Toulon Provence Méditerranée Metropolis. “In Toulon, we have a magnificent Marine building, while in Hyères, we have the Park Hôtel, which could host the offices, workshops, showrooms, and classrooms of the future national fashion centre,” continued the mayor, who was present at the festival’s inauguration alongside Jean-Pierre Blanc and the event’s president, Pascale Mussard.

The opening ceremony was also attended by representatives of the festival’s main partners, as well as Pascal Morand, executive president of the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode (FHCM), and the three presidents of the competition’s juries: Nicolas Di Felice, artistic director of Courrèges, for the fashion category; Achilles Ion Gabriel for accessories; and Spanish artist Coco Capitán for photography.

In front of them, a dense crowd gathered, filling the forecourt of Villa Noailles. The grand openings of the villa, which overlooks the bay, are adorned this year with plush white curtains. Atop the imposing rationalist building, constructed in the 1920s by architect Robert Mallet-Stevens, a flag featuring Courrèges’ emblem flutters. The rooftop is also decorated with whimsical, oversized figures of a musical note, a high heel, and a giant lobster, crafted from the same soft material, nodding to the villa’s surrealist heritage through an installation conceived and realised by artist Rémi Calmont and designer Gabriel Figueiredo, founder of De Pino.

“Liberty, equality, fraternity is the motto of this country. I hope these values will continue to endure. It is unimaginable that they could ever be called into question. You can count on us to ensure that these crucial values, especially freedom, continue to prevail,” declared the competition’s founder and director, wrapping up the official speeches.

Pascale Mussard then officially declared the 39th Festival of Fashion, Accessories, and Photography open, while Jean-Pierre Blanc introduced singer Camille Lellouche, who delighted the audience with her performance. The evening continued with a swinging beat set by activist DJ Leslie Barbara Butch, who made waves during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.
