Armenian fashion certainly exists, says designer Erika Chigingaryan, founder of Platon FF brand and SERENDIPITY modeling agency. In a conversation with us, Erika shared her views on style, talked about the prospects of Armenian fashion and local designers.
The most important thing in style is harmony
Style is a way of self-expression of a person through appearance. In my understanding, different people, based on their inner state, express their needs, desires and emotions through clothing. For example, some strive to demonstrate their wealth by choosing expensive and luxurious things. Others, on the contrary, prefer modesty and simplicity, even with great financial opportunities - like, for example, Steve Jobs, who always wore jeans and a black turtleneck.
You can understand a lot about a person by their style. For me, the most important thing in style is harmony. If a person is in harmony with themselves and their image, their style is perceived organically. Let's take hippies, for example: their clothes may seem strange to many, but if this is their natural expression, we feel this harmony. The same applies to simplicity: if a person is comfortable in jeans and a T-shirt, this is also style. However, there is another thing: the lack of style. Many have noticed how a person can be dressed according to the latest fashion trends, but still look inharmonious. In such cases, it feels like the clothes "live separately" from the person, not reflecting their essence...
Functionality and aesthetics
For me, functionality and aesthetics in clothing go hand in hand, and I always strive to find a balance between them. The priority is the choice of high-quality fabrics and professional tailoring. Today, when technology allows you to use both expensive and affordable raw materials, I adhere to the philosophy of the "golden mean". Luxury clothing, with its inflated markups, in my opinion, often serves only to satisfy ambitions and demonstrate status, which is contrary to my principles. Cheap production also does not meet my quality standards. The mid-range segment is what I strive for: things that combine quality, affordable price and a reasonable approach.
Functionality remains the basis of my work, since clothes must be comfortable, practical and durable. At the same time, I do not lose sight of aesthetics, because it is the design that makes each item unique. As a result, I create products that harmoniously combine beauty, quality and practicality.
... Creating new collections is a process that requires constant updating. It is necessary to release 3-4 collections per year, even if there is no clearly expressed idea. It is important for me to be aware of trends: I closely follow the fashion world, I understand which trends come and which go. However, I do not always strive to follow trends in my collections - it is important for me to maintain uniqueness and express something of my own. …Since the very beginning of my work, I have strived to create high-quality clothes in a minimalist style at affordable prices. This is my philosophy. I want people who wear my clothes to feel that they belong to the luxury category, but at the same time not overpay. The more I delve into the world of fashion, the more I understand all its nuances, and I want to bring my share of democracy to this authoritarian world market.
Individuality of style vs. trends
A trend is a phenomenon that becomes popular at a certain period of time and actively influences people's behavior, encouraging them to follow fashion trends. In the context of fashion, trends stimulate consumption, forcing people to update their wardrobes, even if previous items are still relevant. This creates a market for new collections and supports the economy of the fashion industry.
In addition, trends help people feel their belonging to a social group and express their status. Following trends allows you to declare yourself as a person who is up to date and meets modern standards.
However, I believe that individuality of style is much more important. Don't blindly follow trends, because style is a way to express yourself. Fashion may be temporary, but style is eternal.
Armenian fashion
Armenian fashion certainly exists, and its development began especially actively about ten years ago. A landmark moment was the opening of a platform for Armenian brands on the 4th floor of the Tashir shopping center. It was there that many young designers took their first steps, and later, having united, began to open their own stores throughout Yerevan.
In my opinion, designer clothes from Armenia are distinguished not only by their high quality, but also by an interesting approach, and the prices remain affordable. If you compare our clothes with any network brand in the same price category, obvious advantages are visible. Firstly, it is handmade. Armenian craftsmen cut out every detail by hand with jewelry precision, and the sewing process is carried out with special attention and care.
In this regard, the quality of our clothes wins. Yes, such clothes could be sold much more expensive, but Armenian designers are forced to adapt to the realities of the local market. Nevertheless, this does not detract from its uniqueness and value. Armenian fashion is not just clothes, it is a combination of traditions, craftsmanship and modern aesthetics.
In my opinion, the main feature of Armenian fashion lies not so much in the design or the use of historical elements, but in craftsmanship. Armenian craftsmen have always been famous for their ability to create high-quality and durable products. During the Soviet Union, our shoe and clothing industries occupied leading positions, confirming Armenia's reputation as one of the centers of the textile industry.
Unfortunately, many of these achievements were lost during difficult years. This is especially painful to realize when you understand that for many of us, sewing is a family tradition. I myself witnessed how my parents were forced to close their sewing factory and move to Russia due to the crisis. At that time, the country did not even have electricity for the factory to continue operating.
After some time, I tried to revive this business, but it became obvious that the development of fashion in Armenia is directly related to the stability of the state. Without support and a stable economic base, talented craftsmen and designers cannot fully reveal their potential, although the desire to create and preserve traditions remains unchanged. … Many designers already sell their clothes in different countries, but most often it is about the scale and significance of the brand in the global market. From the very beginning of my career in the fashion industry, I thought about how to make my brand popular in the international arena. After all, at the moment there are no Armenian clothing brands with an international network of stores.
Of course, for this, you need to use all resources: government support, funding and competent specialists. I am going to do this myself in the USA, opening an online platform for sales in the American market.
The relevance of Armenian motifs in fashion
Many designers actively use Armenian motifs in their collections. Particularly popular are patterns from Armenian carpets, church engravings, as well as the ancient Armenian alphabet, which is often found on T-shirts, caps and other accessories. These elements remain relevant and are of particular interest, especially among representatives of the Armenian diaspora.
Personally, I am wary of using ethnic motifs in fashion. Even if I use them in my works, I do it minimally and very delicately, in order to maintain a balance between tradition and modern style... My main principle is "everything ingenious is simple." This idea inspires me in creating designs where the emphasis is on quality and elegant minimalism.
Stylish trick
For me, a jacket is a key element of the wardrobe. There should be many of them, and it is important to have both classic and casual options. A good jacket can transform any look - just throw it on your casual clothes, and your style will immediately become more expressive and elegant.
Anna Hakobyan's favorite vest
I communicated with the first lady through her stylist, who selected my outfits for her. Later, I saw them in photographs and was sincerely happy.
Moreover, the stylist once told me that she liked one vest from my collection so much that she wore it literally until it wore out.
