Regular coffee consumption reduces the risk of age-related weakening of the body. This is the conclusion reached by scientists at the Amsterdam Institute of Public Health. The results of a seven-year study are published in the European Journal of Nutrition.
As part of the work, experts observed the health of more than 1160 people over 55 years old. They focused on five signs of aging: unintentional weight loss, loss of muscle strength, chronic fatigue, slower gait and reduced physical activity.
The analysis showed that those who drank four or more cups of coffee daily were significantly less likely to experience unwanted age-related changes than participants who rarely consumed the beverage or completely eliminated it from their diet.
Scientists attribute the protective effect of coffee to its high content of polyphenols and other antioxidants, which reduce inflammation and oxidative stress - processes that accelerate aging. Caffeine, in turn, helps maintain metabolism, muscle mass and energy levels.
The researchers reminded that the optimal effect is achieved with moderate consumption. It is enough to drink three to five cups of coffee a day, which corresponds to about 400 mg of caffeine. It is important to take into account the individual characteristics of the body and possible contraindications.
