Melinda Gates' toxic college romance had left a lasting impact on her body image.
In a new interview, Melinda revealed that she first began feeling self-conscious about her body in high school, and it only intensified after she met her then-boyfriend at Duke University.
"[It] was not a positive relationship for me at all," she said on The Jamie Kern Lima Show. "He was very concerned about how I looked, and he would say a lot of things to me about it, and it's really not okay."
Gates admitted that it took her "too long" to get over the relationship, and by then she was already affected by the messages.
"I would say it lasted into my 20s and 30s," she said. “And it’s probably only been in my 40s that I’ve become more accepting of who I am.”
Now in her 60s, Gates says she views her body in a different light. “I want to be in shape because I want to be able to do whatever I want,” she explained. “I want to be healthy, but I’m not so focused on my weight or do I fit into this size pants? That’s still in the back of my mind, but it’s not as important.”
The billionaire noted that when you free yourself from feelings of “perfectionism around weight and body image,” you have “a lot more headspace” and peace.
Gates said she’s worked with “several different nutritionists” and a therapist to better understand her “anxiety” about her body.
While her goal was to improve her own quality of life, she wanted also to teach her daughters, Jennifer, 28, and Phoebe, 22, the importance of self-love.
Shortly after graduating from college, Gates met her future husband, Bill Gates, in 1987. The couple got engaged in 1993 and tied the knot a year later. However, they divorced in 2025.
