Research highlights fashion waste ahead of eBay Live launch in UKBy

Following its move to axe individual seller fees on fashion, eBay UK has come up with some interesting statistics about UK consumers’ fashion usage and they highlight a huge amount of waste in the sector.

The company spoke to 2,000 UK adults and found that over half of 18-34 year-olds (56%) say or think ‘I have nothing to wear’ at least once a month.

Yet almost two-thirds (65%) of the UK’s wardrobes go unworn.

Despite not wearing most of what they buy, 92% of Gen Z consumers continue to buy new items for big social moments and as many as 82% spend up to £500 on on such clothes. Of course, given that these purchases are for special occasions, the chances are that the items will be worn infrequently.

In fact, survey respondents suggested that consumers only wear 35% of their wardrobe on a daily basis. “This outfit imbalance leaves fashion lovers with a wardrobe full of ‘worn once’ items, but lacking everyday staple which can be worn and re-worn in multiple ways,” eBay said.

The company said earlier this month that it had removed seller fees for individuals selling fashion products on the UK site and it’s undertaking plenty of PR activity at the moment to convince more consumers to sell their unused items on the site.

Additionally, in the weeks to come, it will pilot eBay Live, a “highly interactive livestream shopping experience” with select sellers. eBay Live allows users to “attend live auctions, shop exclusive deals and buy in real time”.

It has already been successful in the US since launching in 2025 with hundreds of live events hosted every week.

On 1 May, comedian and broadcaster Katherine Ryan will be hosting the UK’s first ever eBay Live event. Shoppers will be able to buy a selection of Katherine Ryan’s items which each have a story behind them, in real time, with all funds raised donated to charity.
