UK studio Zaha Hadid Architects has unveiled the design for the Mediterranean Culture Centre, which is currently under construction on a waterfront site in Reggio Calabria, Italy, Dezeen reports.

The center, inspired by its maritime surroundings, comprises a sinuous, rounded volume that draws on the “radial symmetry of a starfish,” and will be clad in reflective aluminum panels and curved roof openings.

Located along the Strait of Messina in southern Italy, the center has been designed by Zaha Hadid Architects as a key public space for Reggio Calabria. It will form part of the wider redevelopment of the Reggio waterfront.

Once completed, the 24,000-square-meter center will serve as a cultural space hosting events, exhibitions and forums for the local community.

“The new Mediterranean Culture Centre will complement Reggio Calabria’s existing archaeological and art museums, exploring the deep connection between Calabria and the Mediterranean that has defined the region’s past and will continue to shape its future.”

Renderings of the center’s exterior show landscaped courtyards that loop around the building, providing shaded outdoor spaces for visitors.

Inside, the center will be organized into four wings—all sheltered within a single volume.

Sinuous design elements inspired by coastal settings will be present throughout the interior, with renderings also showing sinuous, elevated walkways that will connect the center’s upper levels.

“Creating a visual and sensory narrative, the centre’s interiors are inspired by the Mediterranean and the rich marine environment of the Strait,” the studio said. “With a wealth of colours and organic forms, marine life serves as inspiration for the auditorium interiors, where coral hues evoke the vitality of the strait’s ecosystem.”

Sustainable strategies integrated into the design include the planting of 60 native plants in the center’s courtyards, which will be irrigated with rainwater collected on site, and will contribute to the area’s biodiversity.

In addition, the building’s reflective façade, clad in anodized aluminum panels, is designed to reduce both heat gain and cooling demand.
