Researchers from Korea University (Seoul) have developed a technology for the regeneration of heart tissues with the help of transformation of other types of cells. The research was published in the scientific journal Experimental & Molecular Medicine.
Specialists have learned to transform fibroblasts (connective tissue cells) into mature and functional induced cardiomyocytes (heart muscle cells).
The method is based on the combination of fibroblast growth factor 4 and vitamin C, and this combination accelerates maturation and improves cellular function.
In the experiments, the scientists created a better cell structure with well-defined sarcomeres (pieces of muscle tissue) and T-tubules (elements of the cell membrane), increased electrical activity, with improved ion channel function, and greater efficiency in creating mature, fully reprogrammed cardiomyocytes.
According to the researchers, growing mature cardiomyocytes from the patient's own tissue may enable the repair of damage caused by a heart attack or other cardiovascular diseases.
