Surgical masks have become a symbol of the COVID-19 pandemic, but now they're getting a new use - in disease diagnosis. Researchers from a team led by Corrado Di Natale have developed an innovative mask that can recognize chronic kidney disease (CKD) from the chemical composition of exhaled air. The work is published in the journal ACS Sensors.
In CKD, metabolic products accumulate in the body, including ammonia, which is released with respiration. Although its levels can be elevated in other diseases, scientists have created a sensor that can detect a range of volatile organic compounds specific to CBD - such as ammonia, ethanol, propanol and acetone.
The researchers embedded the sensor between the layers of a conventional medical mask. It consists of silver electrodes coated with a polymer laced with porphyrins - molecules sensitive to gases. When interacting with metabolites in the breath, the electrical conductivity of the sensor changes, which is detected by the device.
The results are impressive: 100 people participated in the test - half of them were diagnosed with CKD. The sensor correctly identified the presence of the disease in 84% of cases and its absence - in 88%. The authors emphasize that the technology could become an affordable and non-invasive tool for early diagnosis and monitoring. “The use of such a mask will allow timely detection of changes in the condition of patients with CKD,” said study co-authors Sergio Bernardini and Annalisa Noche.
