After the successes of pre-Christmas ‘Super Saturday’ and ‘Frenzied Friday’ shopping events comes the post-Christmas ‘Takeback Tuesday’. And boy, is it expected to be busy.

Returns of unwanted and ill-fitting Christmas presents purchased online are predicted to increase by 52% compared to the average number of return parcels per day in December, according to Royal Mail. But while Tuesday will be higher than December's average as a whole, it remains to be seen how the actual figures will compare with last year.

And of course, returns are an important part of the online shopping experience, as a study commissioned by Royal Mail shows, with 81% of shoppers agreeing a good returns experience would make them more likely to shop with that retailer in the future.

Also, 81% of consumers are less likely to shop with a retailer that charges for returns, than one that doesn’t, while 47% of those surveyed said free returns would most encourage them to choose one retailer over another.

Meanwhile, 61% of people would prefer to get their return parcels collected from home rather than dropping them off themselves.

Nick Landon, Chief Commercial Officer at Royal Mail, said: “As every retailer knows, an easy and convenient returns experience that’s in line with shoppers’ expectations, is vital for repeat business.
