Major Barnsley public space and retail development, The Glass Works Square, has opened with a big event featuring various local dignitaries reflecting the importance of the site to the town.

The £200 million Glass Works leisure and shopping development has been several years in the making and will be fully unveiled in phases over the next half-year.
The public square is the key part of the development that should underline its impact on the public consciousness in Barnsley. And its opening comes with several new stores too.
Next, Sports Direct, TK Maxx and USC all opened on Thursday, joining existing stores such as Deichmann and JD Sports. Importantly, next year will also see the arrival of a branch of Flannels.
Last month, Frasers Group said Flannels would be taking an 11,000 sq ft unit and had signed a 10-year lease. At the time, the Glass Works said it would add “some glitz to the retail line-up”.
To boost footfall further, leisure attractions such as Superbowl UK and a Cineworld 13-screen multiplex will open early next year as well.
Back in January 2025, Next was announced as the first tenant to sign up for the location that had originally been planned for completion last year. Obviously, the pandemic got in the way of that aim.
