Japanese clothing and home goods retailer Muji has become the latest victim of the tough retail environment, calling in administrators for its European operations.
However, a pre-pack deal is expected to kick in as part of a planned restructure, with all its seven UK stores continuing to operate, for now.
Muji has six high-profile stores in London with addresses in Covent Garden, Carnaby Street, Oxford Street, Tottenham Court Road, Kensington and Islington, together with one store in Birmingham.
A Muji spokesperson has confirmed the move is part of a planned strategic restructuring of the business and “Muji’s management expects to conclude a deal shortly”.
The spokesman stressed the process would have no immediate impact on "shops, staff and the general running of the chain", saying that “for Muji’s colleagues and customers in Europe it is business as usual – all stores and e-commerce will continue to operate as before, and all new and outstanding orders will be fulfilled”.
In its accounts for the year ending August 31 2025, UK-registered Muji Europe Holdings Limited reported turnover of £75.8 million, but an operating loss of nearly £16.3 million. It hasn't filed accounts since then, and a notice on its page on the Companies house website shows the latest set of accounts is now seven months overdue.
The 54-year-old Japanese firm becomes the latest well-known high street brand to submit to trading difficulties. It follows fashion/lifestyle retailer Ted Baker to call in administrators this month, and The Body Shop’s move into administration announced in February, subsequently announcing the closure of nearly half of its UK stores.
Last year, home goods and beauty retailer Wilko also closed 400 stores.
