It’s been a long time coming but Burberry has finally reopened its New Bond Street flagship in London. The reborn store is almost unrecognisable from its predecessor with the location at 21-23 New Bond Street being the strongest statement yet about the new Burberry era that has been ushered in by creative chief Daniel Lee and CEO Jonathan Akeroyd.

So what’s on the menu at the store? It’s an “immersive shopping experience”, offering womenswear, menswear, eyewear, shoes, and accessories. That’s no surprise. But there’s a much stronger focus on leather goods than before, as well as a brand new VIP area.

The interior is minimalist and is “punctuated with an eclectic mix of contemporary furniture, creating a stripped-back setting designed to spotlight key Burberry pieces”.

And the company is keeping close links to its heritage, for instance with overhead lighting crafted to replicate the Burberry Check pattern that was introduced in the 1920s and is still a key part of every Burberry collection today.

The works on the store have been two years in the making, the location having closed when the brand was still in the hands of former CEO Marco Gobbetti and creative head Riccardo Tisci.

Of the reopening, Jonathan Akeroyd said the store “showcases our beautifully crafted products in a luxury setting that connects our customers with our brand and unique heritage”.

It’s good timing for the label as footfall to Bond Street continues to ramp up, despite the absence of tax-free shopping for tourists. There’s plenty of development happening on the street too as the world’s biggest luxury brands move in or upsize their existing locations.
