As the UK government continues to react to the coronavirus pandemic, on Tuesday, the Chancellor announced a major package that went much further than the economic assistance that had been announced in last week's spring budget.

For retailers, the big news is that they’re part of a group of businesses (along with pubs, theatres, music venues and restaurants) that will get a 12-month business rates holiday.
And those businesses that had already been helped during the budget last week – those with a rateable value of less than £51,000 – will also now get a cash grant of up to £25,000.
Chancellor Rishi Sunak said in delivering the news that it's currently "a time to be bold, time for courage. This government will give you all the tools you need to get through this”.
He also promised help to consumers such as a mortgage payment holiday for those in difficulty because of the coronavirus and other measures to be announced in the next few days.
And he said the government would work with business groups and trade unions on ways of protecting people’s jobs during the difficult period caused by the coronavirus.
As of this morning, the UK had almost 2,000 confirmed cases of the illness, although it's difficult to know how many there are in reality as the government isn't testing people as much as some countries are. The government’s chief scientific advisor thinks there may actually be around 55,000 people in the country suffering from it so far and he also said the aim is to keep deaths from the illness below 20,000. To put this into context, seasonal flu reportedly kills around 8,000 people a year.
