Scottish retail sales up in June,乌云漏洞快排利用 clothing among rising categoriesBy

It was like Christmas shopping in June when it came to retail sales numbers in Scotland. Consumers buying discounted clothing and footwear in preparation for their holidays helped push total sales in Scotland higher for a second straight month, making it the best performance since last December, according to Scottish Retail Consortium.

And this was achieved despite lower footfall last month in sunny weather and the pressure of high rates of inflation, making the numbers even more impressive noted .

“This outpaced the figure for the UK as a whole and was the best monthly real terms performance since Christmas,” noted David Lonsdale, Director of the Scottish Retail Consortium.

Last month, total Scottish sales jumped 11.3% compared to a year ago when they had grown a more modest 4.4%. However, adjusted for inflation, the year-on-year growth was 2.9%.

This was also above the three-month average increase of 10.5% and the 12-month average growth of 8.5%.

On a like-for-like basis, sales increased 8.5% against a June 2025 rise of 3.3%.

Total Non-Food sales increased 7.5% in June on a year ago when they had increased by 5.8%. This was above the three-month average increase of 6.1% and the 12-month average of 5.4%.

Adjusted for the estimated effect of online sales, total Non-Food sales increased 6.9% against a 1.4% dip a year ago.

Lonsdale added: “Clothing and footwear proved to be the star of the Non-Food category, due to a combination of aggressive discounting by retailers and Scots preparing for summer holidays.

“However, retailers found consumers focused their spending on items in the [clearance] sales, with there being little desire to spend more for in-season or full-priced stock. That continues the trend of shoppers keeping their discretionary spending laser-focused on what they need right now, which was corroborated by a weak month for larger or homeware purchases.”

Paul Martin, Partner at UK Head of Retail KPMG, which compiled the numbers, added: “The sun shone on Scottish retailers throughout June as sales growth hit double digits for the first time this year.

“Sales of suntan lotion, food and clothing were all given a boost as Scots made the most of the record temperatures which helped total sales grow.

“Positively, retail sales growth has remained steady at around 9% every month in the first half of this year.  However, the growth comes against a background of much higher inflation levels resulting in reduced margins and profitability for operators across the sector.”

He added: “Consumers have so far remained resilient, but the triple threats of further interest rate hikes, resolute double digit food inflation and an economy recovering at slower rate than predicted, could hamper a return to much needed profitable growth across the retail sector.”
