We all know that the delivery and returns process is a key selling point for a retailer or brand when consumers are ordering online, and a new study shows that some are offering very long windows when it comes to returns, while others want their items back on the digital shelves much faster.

The Retailer Returns Report from webretailer.com has compared the delivery and returns policies of over 25 of the leading online fashion retailers in the UK, and has identified the fashion brands with the briefest returns windows.
It can take some shoppers a while to decide whether they like an item or not but JD Sports and Motel both only give them 14 days to make a return. Motel also charges customers an extra £1 for returns, although JD Sports doesn't charge any fees for sending items back.
Yet Motel scored the highest marks overall in the report for combined delivery and returns policies. Perhaps it feels confident to make that returns window short because its delivery is so fast. It offers an extremely cheap next-day delivery cost of £3.99 – allowing Motel to score 10/10 in this section. Its standard delivery cost (£2.95) also scored it highly (9/10).
Of the brands looked at, 11 give shoppers 28 days to make returns. They are ASOS, In The Style, H&M, Lavish Alice, Missguided, Nasty Gal, Next, New Look, Pretty Little Thing, River Island and Sports Direct.
That said, In The Style, Nasty Gal and Next also charge customers an extra fee to make a return. It costs £2 to make a return with Nasty Gal, while In The Style and Next both charge £2.50 for.
Some 13 brands give customers an even more generous 30 days to return an item, including & Other Stories, Adidas, Bershka, Dr Martens, Mango, Monki, Nike, Nobody’s Child, Pull & Bear, Stradivarius, Urban Outfitters, Weekday and Zara. Only two of the 13 brands also charged a fee for returns. Zara charges £1.95 to send an unwanted item back, while Adidas gets customers to pay £2.50.
Topping the list in term of generous returns policies are Shein on 45 days, and Oh Polly and The North face on a surprisingly long 60 days.
Shein is interesting because it came in second place in the overall report, behind Motel. But unlike that retailer, its returns window is huge.
The report cited its overall efficient customer service, low prices (£2 for standard delivery) and that giant (and free) returns window for its high score.
