Liberty Retail Limited has filed its results for the year to the end of January and said that the start of the financial period saw its flagship London store returning to pre-pandemic-style levels of trading as Covid restrictions were removed that spring.
This meant total revenue jumped to £116.17 million from £82 million as the flagship was open for a full year, compared to only nine months in the previous period. Flagship sails per square foot were £1,184 compared to £701 a year earlier.
And EBITDA, before one-off costs rose to £3.96 million from a loss of £3.53 million in the previous 12 months. But it was still well behind the £14.4 million generated in the last pre-Covid year.
Also, operating profit worsened from £2.48 million in the previous period to only £22,000 this time. But this seems to have been an exceptional situation. The company said this was the “net position of improved trading offset by the exceptional inter-company impairment reversal of circa £11.5 million in the prior-year”.
It all caused a loss after tax of £2.59 million, compared to a profit of £3.84 million in the prior year.
But the retailer — whose Tudor-style flagship is in an unmissable building on Great Marlborough Street, just off Regent Street — was generally upbeat however. It said that after the general improvement during the year, the store continued to show resilience in the Christmas period, even though inflation and cost-of-living concerns were making headlines.
And its e-commerce business continued to grow in a market where online retail was hugely challenged by the physical stores bounce-back. The company made efficiency improvements to its webstore with the focus on improving the EBITDA contribution from online sales.
