Frasers group has continued on the acquisition trail and its latest purchase is premium menswear retailer John Anthony, which it has bought for an unspecified sum.

The retailer has five stores focused on south-west England (in Bristol, Bournemouth, Bath, Swindon and Southampton) and also runs its own webstore.

The 44-year-old business is a long established independent in the UK menswear category and is known for carrying a mix of designer collections from both new and established labels. Its brand line-up includes Acne Studios, Belstaff, Cole Buxton, Fred Perry, Hoka, Hugo, Vivienne Westwood, and Dsquared2.

Companies House filings show that owners for the past decade — Mark Brewer, Alastair Irvine and Tony Stuckes — are no longer directors of the business.

Frasers is known for snapping up business at bargain prices and recent purchases include major stakes in Boohoo Group, N Brown and ASOS, plus a takeover of MySale, multiple brands from JD Sports, SneakerBoy, Gieves & Hawkes and shopping centre The Mall. However, it has also sold an earlier acquisition, Missguided.

There has been speculation that it might try to buy Browns if struggling Farfetch decides to sell it.

As for its latest buy, it’s unclear whether the John Anthony name will continue or the chain will be folded into one of Frasers’ other operations. Its Flannels chain also focuses on luxury fashion, selling both men’s and womenswear, as well as beauty.
