Burlington Arcade in London’s West End may already be a huge shopper and tourist draw but it’s also pulling out all the stops for the festive season and will officially unveil its very first Christmas Grotto on1 December.
Such initiatives are key for generating visitor traffic at this time of year (as can be seen across town by Harrods’ giant Valentino Pink Christmas tree). Such installations help physical retailers tempt consumers away from the online shopping habit they’ve developed in recent years during the Christmas season.
Designed by florist Jane Wadham and artist Aga Skiba, the Grotto will be open throughout December and will host an extensive programme of festive experiences within the surroundings of the historic Mayfair Arcade.
There will be activities such as wreath workshops, live classical music, a festive table landscaping showcase and Christmas feast, to Biscuiteers workshops and a charity children’s book reading by pop star-turned-author Geri Halliwell Horner.
The façade of the Grotto has been hand painted by Skiba who created installations referencing three inspirations: the beauty of nature, childhood memories and memorable travel experiences.
The entire length of the arcade is also dressed with fresh pine trees, wreaths and twinkling lights.
For all workshops taking place within the Grotto, attendees will be able to try free Justerini & Brooks 250th Anniversary Cuvée Champagne. Britain's longest-standing fine wine and spirits merchant, Justerini & Brooks will also be opening its first retail space at Burlington Arcade in January 2025.
And other brands are also staging special experiences there during this period.
Burlington Arcade has been transformed in recent years into a high-end fashion destination with labels including Manolo Blahnik, Strathberry, Baudoin & Lange, and Roja Parfums. Its most recent opening was an Anya Hindmarch boutique.
