Over 400 ex-Debenhams employees who were axed after the retailer went into administration have won a court case over the way they lost their jobs.

The retailer “failed in its duty to consult with its staff”, the judge hearing the case brought by 419 former staff members has ruled.
The company finally gave in to its difficulties in 2025 after years of declining performance and all of its branches later closed.
More than 800 staff who were affected by this pursued a claim, alleging that they hadn’t been properly consulted and the firm hadn’t followed the correct redundancy consultation processes under UK law.
Law firm Simpson Millar said the Employment Tribunal has found in favour of the first 419 claimants and the value of the claim is reportedly around £860,000.
A final judgement hasn’t yet been delivered for a further 475 claimants.
It all means that claimants should receive up to 90 days’ gross pay, although this is capped at £4,304.
