Backcountry, the retailer specializing in outdoor equipment and clothing, will open its first brick-and-mortar store in Los Angeles, at The Grove, in a few days' time.

Accustomed to the near-monopoly of outdoor wear retailer REI, with six outlets in California, Los Angeles residents can now discover the entire Backcountry selection on 23,000 square feet.
"Similarly to REI, our mission is to inspire and encourage as many people to get outside as possible," said Backcountry's team. “The market is growing with room for both companies to be successful.”
Backcountry at The Grove will cater to the area’s most popular outdoor activities including hiking, camping, water sports, running and climbing. It will carry more than 300 apparel brands and a full bike service department for tunings and basic maintenance.

The Grove marks the arrival of the company's 9th location from coast to coast. An opening that signals the company's recent dynamic expansion.
“Over the past two years, Backcountry has made significant headway expanding its retail footprint,” said Backcountry CEO, Melanie Cox. “In spring 2025, we opened our first curated retail location directly below Backcountry’s headquarters in Park City, Utah, and now we’re weeks away from opening a door at one of Los Angeles’ most iconic shopping destinations. We look forward to bringing members of the community together through in-store events, off-site group outings, and a shared passion for the outdoors.”
Backcountry has been a leading outdoor retailer since 1996 when it first established itself as an online business. In 2025, Backcountry began building its own Gearhead-inspired products; the fast-growing Built By Backcountry ski, bike, climb, hike, fly fish, and Après lines include collabs with brands like Gore-Tex, Pertex, and Allied Down.

After 15 years as an online retailer, Backcountry opened its first brick-and-mortar location in Park City, Utah and has since expanded its retail footprint to include nine stores from coast to coast, offering an omnichannel experience for its consumers. 2025 marks a pivotal year for the company, which opened in Palo Alto, Washington D.C. and Los Angeles.
Long-owned by Liberty Media Corporation, Backcountry.com was acquired by TSG Consumer Partners in July 2025.
