LVMH Métiers d'Art has announced it has picked young Japanese artist Shu Yonezawa for the residency linked to the ninth edition of its Résidence Artistique project, which will be staged in Japan this year. It is a confirmation of the strong connection LVMH Métiers d’Art has with the Asian country, where it opened an office in 2025.

The Résidence Artistique programme supports art practitioners and promotes innovation in traditional craftsmanship techniques. Yonezawa’s artistic residency will begin on January 13 and will last for six months. She will be based in Okayama, with renowned denim producer Kuroki, which this year is celebrating its 75th anniversary.

Kuroki is renowned for its meticulous, vertically integrated manufacturing process, in which the company controls each step, from dyeing to weaving and finishing. Kuroki uses vintage shuttle looms and spring water from the Iba region, which help give its denim its unique texture and high quality.

Yonezawa, 27, is an emerging artist whose work explores the intersection between physical and digital reality. Collaborating with Kuroki will be “a unique opportunity to combine traditional Japanese artisanal techniques with a contemporary artistic vision. The artwork created [by Yonezawa] will be presented in the second half of 2025, at a venue to be announced later,” said LVMH in a press release.
