Singapore's 23-story Pan Pacific Orchard skyscraper, designed by architecture studio WOHA, has won the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) award for the best new tall building in the world, Dezeen reports.
Located in the city's Orchard Road area, the 350-room hotel features four large green terraces cut into the building's rectangular shape.
CTBUH, which described the building as a "hotel in nature," awarded it its top accolade—world's best tall building—for how it showcases Singapore's sustainable vision.
"Among Orchard's iconic shopping malls, leafy boulevards and mixed-use towers, Pan Pacific Orchard stands out as a beacon of Singapore's green vision," CTBUH said.
“The project’s ‘hotel in nature’ concept transforms a traditional high-rise building into a vertical green space, with multiple terraced gardens and water features integrated into the building, achieving a green space ratio of over 300 per cent.”
Pan Pacific Orchard is divided into segments, each with a six-storey plot overlooking a terrace with a different theme—forest, beach, garden, and cloud. These terraces provide covered outdoor spaces for guests, as well as helping to cross-ventilate the interior spaces. They are supported by large angular columns covered in plants, which are intended to help enhance the city’s biodiversity.
Pan Pacific Orchard was named also the winner of the CTBUH’s Best Tall Building 100-199m category. Other winners included One Za’abeel in Dubai, which was recently named the world’s best new skyscraper by Dezeen readers.
