Nike’s much-criticised decision to not issue a replica jersey for England goalkeeper Mary Earps ahead of the recent World Cup in Australia has come in for more criticism following the team reaching the final and Earps being presented with the Golden Glove award at the end of the tournament.
Nike had originally decided against issuing a goalie’s replica jersey with Earps herself slamming the move, as did fans and football pundits.
The global sports giant has now issued a statement saying that “we hear and understand the desire for a retail version of a goalkeeper jersey and we are working towards solutions for future tournaments, in partnership with Fifa and the federations”.
And the company added that it’s “committed to women's football and excited by the passion around this year's tournament and the incredible win by the Lionesses to make it into the final”.
Fans have been posting pictures of themselves on social media wearing customised shirts with Earps’ name on it. Small retailers and individuals have also been producing shirts such as one from illustrator Holly Collins that says “Number one, second to none” above “Mearps”, plus “Safe hands – safe heart. Mary, Queen of Shots”.
A petition has also been launched on Change.org to get Nike to change its mind and it has over 85,000 signatures.
