The designer of the world's tallest building is now planning to build skyscrapers that can store energy. The Chicago firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM), which designed the Burj Khalifa, is now aiming to turn the skyscrapers into batteries using gravity.

“What if a building could become a battery? We are collaborating with Energy Vault to optimize the gravity energy storage system,” SOM said.

The partnership aims to develop the future of sustainable building architectures that will accelerate the return on carbon emissions for the first time.

As part of this strategic partnership, SOM will become the exclusive architect and design engineer for Energy Vault's next generation gravity energy storage systems (GESS). This includes incorporating the technology into high-rise buildings in urban areas and deployed structures in natural environments, maximizing sustainability, accelerating carbon payback, and reducing the levelized cost of energy consumption.

The Energy Vault project in Shanghai is about 150 meters (490 feet) tall, but the SOM skyscraper's batteries could be much taller, starting at 300 meters, reports Bloomberg.

“Since its founding, SOM has pushed the boundaries of architecture and engineering, redefining what buildings can do for cities and communities,” said SOM’s Adam Semel.
