Footasylum has opened its new flagship store in what amounts to another vote of confidence in the future of London’s Oxford Street. The 20,000 sq ft space opened on Thursday at 73-89 Oxford Street as the retailer “continues to see strong demand for its branded streetwear offering”.

Trading across two floors, with additional customer service and click & collect lockers located in the basement, it’s occupying a site previously held by New Look.

The location offers the firm’s extensive men’s, junior and womenswear offer alongside footwear.

The company said it has made “a significant investment in digital capabilities in order to create a mobile-first customer journey that seamlessly connects Footasylum’s online and in-store offerings”.

And there are 100 motion screens displaying digital signage that have been installed “in order to provide an even more immersive in-store experience”.

It makes sense for the company to open on the premier shopping thoroughfare in the UK, because even in its patchy post-pandemic period, Oxford Street still attracts around 200 million shoppers annually.

But it’s not only Central London that’s a focus for the firm. The opening comes as it continues to expand elsewhere since being acquired by Aurelius last year. A new store in Watford, Hertfordshire will open in October with a 6,000 sq ft space debuting in the Harlequin shopping centre.

It’s also upsizing existing stores, including Westfield Stratford City and Lakeside (already complete), plus Birmingham Bullring and Leeds White Rose (due later this year).

CEO and executive chairman Barry Brown said: “Oxford Street is by far and away the UK’s most important and sought after physical retail location. As well as attracting hundreds of millions of shoppers every year, it is also a must-visit for any global brand seeking to understand the UK’s fashion landscape. Having such an impressive and prominent store on Oxford Street will be pivotal to showcasing our incredible proposition to the whole world and internationalising the Footasylum brand.

“I’ve worked on hundreds of store openings over the years, and can safely say that this is the most impressive and exciting store I’ve ever had the pleasure of being involved with. The store is jam packed with the most advanced retail technology, the latest trainer drops, and the best of trending streetwear.”
