Researchers at Hitit University (HU) of Turkey have developed bandage materials made from onion and apple peels. The discovery was reported on the official website of this academic institution.
According to experts, onion peel is rich in an antioxidant called quercetin, which has antibacterial properties.
Also, the research team developed an apple-based biopolymer, pullulan, which can replace starch with its thickening and film-forming properties.
"We have created two types of materials: a thin film for superficial wounds, and an injectable gel that thickens under the influence of light and is suitable for deep and uneven wounds. It adapts to the shape of the wound and stimulates tissue regeneration," said Bengi Ozkahraman, co-author of the discovery and associate professor at the Department of Polymer Materials Engineering at HU.
The study confirmed that this bandage material based on onion peel extract has the properties of commercial analogues.
The discovery indicates the high potential for the use of natural resources in biomedicine.
