Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Finland have introduced an innovative chewing gum that can neutralize influenza and herpes viruses directly in the mouth, reports Planet Today.

The development, described in the medical journal Molecular Therapy, uses modified biomolecules that block the penetration of pathogens into cells.

This technology is based on recombinant proteins integrated into the gum matrix. These compounds mimic receptors on host cells, binding to surface structures of viruses. In the case of influenza, this binding occurs with hemagglutinin (HA), and in the case of herpes—with glycoprotein D. This interaction prevents viruses from attaching to mucous membranes, reducing the likelihood of infection by 68-83% in laboratory studies.

The preventive effect of this chewing gum lasts up to 4 hours after chewing for 20 minutes. It is effective against 12 strains of influenza A and B, including H1N1. One of the main advantages is safety: the components are not absorbed into the blood, which makes it suitable for widespread use.

In a clinical study involving 150 volunteers, a 95% reduction in viral load in saliva was recorded 1 hour after chewing this gum. In addition, 78% of the participants did not get sick after contact with infected people. Side effects, including mild heartburn, were reported only in 4% of the study participants.

This development is particularly important for healthcare workers, immunocompromised patients, and travelers during pandemic seasons.

The production of this chewing gum is planned to begin in 2026—after Phase 3 clinical trials are completed.

Also, researchers are exploring the possibility of adapting this technology to protect against SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory viruses.

This approach could be the first non-invasive way to prevent airborne infections, complementing traditional vaccines and antiviral drugs.

The use of such chewing gum could significantly increase protection against common viral diseases, especially in crowded places.
