The brand is due to appoint Opus Restructuring as liquidator to wind up its UK business at a creditors’ meeting Friday (28 October) with representatives of its suppliers, customers and UK workforce expected to attend.

It currently continues to trade in Europe and Japan, but the future of those operations in the UK and Europe are now at risk. People Tree’s European website is continuing to operate, with a message promising that shipping to the UK will begin soon. But former insiders told The Guardian newspaper the European operation’s only employee was also being made redundant, casting doubts on running operations to the UK.

After an ongoing tough trading period, it had warned creditors it cannot meet its debts, especially to its suppliers in India. It has already made the majority of its UK workers redundant in recent months.

Those debts are understood to include £3.7 million owed to other People Tree entities within the group, £1.2 million to founders Safia and James Minney, and more than £273,000 to 14 of its UK staff. Suppliers in India are also understood to be owed more than £100,000 with one due more than £400,000, according to the letter to creditors.

Founded in 1991 in Tokyo as Global Village, People Tree launched in the UK a decade later. It became an early promoter of sustainable fashion, collaborating with designers including Vivienne Westwood and Orla Kiely, while it had the support of celebrity clients including actor Emma Watson and the model Jo Wood.

It also campaigned for better treatment of garment workers around the world.

Safia Minney, who stepped back from day-to-day operations in 2025, said she was “heartbroken” about the liquidation.

James Minney, who is currently the chief executive of People Tree in the UK and Japan, said: “I am extremely sad at this situation. Our customers and our wholesale stockists have been and always will be the absolute rock of support for People Tree. Our suppliers and creditors, with whom we have been in close discussions throughout this difficult time, have been supportive throughout our journey."
