Scientists create window that can 谷歌排名留痕技术解析cool a multi-story building
November 18, 2025 14:03In South Korea, researchers have developed an innovative window coating that effectively cools high-rise buildings with minimal energy consumption. This breakthrough could reduce reliance on air conditioning and heating systems, which consume significant amounts of electricity, New Atlas reports.
Windows play a crucial role in regulating indoor temperatures but are also a major source of heat loss. Scientists from POSTECH and Korea University have created a material that can dissipate heat while allowing visible light to pass through, maintaining the transparency of the glass.
The new coating consists of three layers: polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), a thin layer of silver, and a Bragg mirror. The PDMS layer emits far-infrared radiation perceived as heat, while the silver layer reflects most of the solar spectrum but allows visible light to pass through micro-perforations. The Bragg mirror reflects longwave near-infrared radiation, which constitutes a significant portion of solar heat.
Tests revealed that this coating could keep the glass surface 22.1 degrees Celsius cooler than glass coated only with PDMS. This is one of the most significant cooling effects achieved with such materials. Experts hope the coating will be used to manufacture windows that keep buildings cool without compromising natural light, thereby reducing the need for heating and cooling systems.
“This technology is ready for mass production and holds significant potential in architecture and environmental sustainability,” said Professor Junsuk Rho, the study’s lead researcher.
