Scientists from the Korea Institute of Advanced Science and Technology have identified an enzyme whose blocking can “convert” cancer cells to a healthy state. The results of the study are published in the journal Advanced Science (AdvSci).
Today, chemotherapy and radiotherapy remain the main methods of fighting cancer, but they are often accompanied by severe side effects and cause damage not only to cancerous but also to healthy tissues. A new method proposed by scientists may become a gentler alternative, allowing to affect the pathological process without significant negative consequences for the patient.
A group of specialists led by Professor Kwang-Hon Cho identified a key stage in the development of tumor cells. The scientists focused on the stage when they are in a borderline state between normality and pathology.
Studies conducted on model organoids created from colon cancer cells have shown that blocking a special enzyme leads to stop their growth and restore the normal state of cells. This is one of the complex compounds that protect the proteins responsible for tumor growth.
Although further research will be needed to introduce this technique into clinical practice, the scientists hope that their work will serve as a basis for the creation of new, less traumatic approaches to cancer treatment.
