The nominations for the 97th Academy Awards have been announced. Emilia Perez led the way with 13 nominations, followed by Brutalist and Wicked with 10 each.
The musical Emilia Perez was a success despite some controversy. The film's four Golden Globe wins have somewhat assuaged criticism of many aspects of the film, including Selena Gomez's alleged difficulty with her character's Spanish dialogue and the film's various issues with its representation of the transgender community.
Brutalist, directed by Brady Corbet, stars Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones as Hungarian refugees who come to the United States after World War II.
Jon M. Chu's "Wicked" earned a best picture nomination, as well as individual nominations for stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, the latter of whom was a first-time nominee.
The acting categories were dominated by first-time Oscar nominees, including Kieran Culkin, Demi Moore, Isabella Rossellini and Zoe Saldana.
Conan O'Brien will host the ceremony, which will air on ABC on March 2.
