Italian leather goods label Valextra has a new home, Casa Valextra, in the heart of Kyoto. The store is a hymn to craftsmanship, a multisensory space featuring iconic Italian design items from the last five decades, local artisanal products and cult contemporary objects.

Casa Valextra is a two-storey former tea house, an example of traditional Japanese architecture in wood and stone located on Kyoto’s Hanami Street. It showcases iconic items by leading Italian object designers like BBPR, Gianfranco Frattini, Franco Albini, Gabriella Crespi and Luigi Caccia Dominioni, from the private collection of the Luisa Delle Piane Gallery in Milan.

Valextra's new opening marks the label’s entry in the lifestyle segment, with a range including a desk blotter, a pen holder, a pocket emptier tray, a diary cover, a jewellery box, and a pencil case with Faber Castell pencils. The products are made in multi-dimensional Millepunte calfskin, trimmed with black lacquered Costa borders and Inchiostro hand-painted accents.

The new line is presented alongside various vintage Valextra items, like the 1963 Carita shoulder bag, the 1968 Tric Trac bag, and the 1973 Premiere briefcase, as well as a limited-edition leather goods line made by Italian artisans as a tribute to the city of Kyoto, including the Costa travel case, specifically designed to hold a kimono, a silk scarf and a special version of the Iside handbag featuring a sculptural handle.

The store's interiors have been curated by Luciano Giorgi Studio LGB, which designed the green-lacquered polished brass furniture, incorporating brushed and dyed Japanese hemlock wood, reminiscent of the country’s dense forests, while the bright green wallpaper adds a further decorative touch. Specialist agency Studio Temp has developed a new typeface for Valextra, inspired by the 1962 Valextra typeface created by renowned architect and graphic designer A.G. Fronzoni.

Casa Valextra’s second floor hosts a private bar designed in collaboration with Kyoto’s Ritz Carlton hotel, recreating an authentic Milanese bar experience and serving a selection of signature Italian drinks. The bar service will be upgraded on a regular basis, thanks to Valextra’s collaboration with leading industry professionals.
