The romance of hipster Dubai, pink flamingos, a “snow-white” beach and fine dining. This is how our perfect day in Dubai went. This time we decided to skip the tiring running around the luxurious malls and spend the day immersed in the endless art galleries of Alserkal Avenue, admired the playful flamingos in the Ras Al Khor Nature Reserve, basked on the flawless glamorous beach of White Beach Club, tasted exquisite dishes at the Michelin-starred Orfali Bros, and ended the evening with a glass of sparkling wine at Bisou.
But first things first.
Alserkal Avenue was an amazing discovery for us. This is a stunning art space located in former industrial warehouses with an area of over 46,000 square meters.
More than 70 galleries, a library, a cinema, a café, shops of local designers and more. You can spend the whole day here and not feel tired because surprises and unforgettable impressions await you behind every alley, in every building.
For example, Iranian artist Behzad Khosravi Nouri’s unusual exhibition "The Life of a Wanderer through a Hole in the Wall by Behzad Khosravi Nouri," in which he explores photographs taken by his grandfather Gholamreza Amirbeigi between 1956 and 1968.
Or an emotional exposition of Palestinian artists who managed to save and take out paintings and sculptures from war-torn Gaza.
Or you can sit and drink coffee in the art installation of the architect and visual artist Dima Srouji. By the way, admission to all galleries is free.
On the day of our visit, the local vintage-style cinema was showing Sergei Paranjanov's film "The Color of Pomegranates."
A huge poster of Sofiko Chiaureli immediately caught our eye, and we enthusiastically began telling the surprised Alserkal representative Russell, who was accompanying us, about this brilliant Armenian filmmaker.
In fact, the most striking thing about Alserkal Avenue is the atmosphere.
It’s easy to strike up a conversation with a stranger here, which can seamlessly and harmoniously transition into a discussion about contemporary art, philosophy, or the intricacies of coffee roasting.
Speaking of the latter, we recommend the local coffee shop Nightjar Coffee Roasters. Passionate about coffee and the communities that grow it, Nightjar was created by a group of coffee lovers.
Here you can get your caffeine fix and also grab a tasty snack. We chose the Cacio e Pepe omelette with pecorino cheese and roasted peppers, topped with creamy burrata and served with butter sourdough.
Then you can explore the local shops. Check out the Italian shoe factory, where you can buy designer bags and handmade shoes at quite reasonable prices for Dubai.
Don’t miss the niche perfume van La Lebo, where you can buy not only killer fragrances, but also candles and body care products.
If you need to fix your hair, visit the local beauty salon—the first unisex salon in Dubai, where men and women are served in the same room.
Afterwards, you can go to one of the local creative studios and take a short master class. For example, the Âme studio combines the beauty of flowers, fashion, art, and design. Here you can make a bouquet or wrap a gift yourself, getting advice from local artists, designers and stylists, admiring the blooming views around.
And if you find yourself in Alserkal Avenue on Saturday, you can try different delicacies at the local "farmers' market." For lovers of vintage products, we recommend coming here on Sunday for the "flea market."
We did not want to leave this unique community. And we promised ourselves to come back here on our next trip to enjoy the color music of the evening at Alserkal Avenue.
Ahead of us was the Ras Al Khor nature reserve, located near Dubai.
We came here to admire the pink flamingos, which live here in incredible numbers precisely in the winter.
Admission to this reserve is free, but you can admire these exotic birds for just 10 minutes. The impressions, however, will last for a long time.
Happy and satisfied, we decided to relax at the White Beach Club at the Atlantis, The Palm resort. A very glamorous beach, perfect for Instagram photos.
Prices start from 120 dirhams—depending on the time of day and the location of the sunbed or cabana on the beach. White Beach Club is a luxurious club for adults only. Ideal if you are without children. There are several huge pools with sunbeds inside for those who prefer to sunbathe in style and laziness.
As soon as we literally settled down on a huge bed, an attentive waiter ran up to us and offered drinks. Aperol spritz with Moët & Chandon Rosé impressed, as did the taco with king crab.
The sea at this time of year is amazing, moderately cool, I did not want to get out of the water.
By the way, in the changing room, in addition to a hair dryer with several attachments, there is also a curling iron—women will understand me. It is very thoughtful if you decide to stay here for a long time, as the music gets louder and more rhythmic towards the evening, tempting you with dancing. And us, girls, always want to look beautiful, especially after a tan.
However, we decided not to stay on the beach until the fun began, as dinner was ahead of us. We recommend that you consider two options. The first is to go to the Orfali Bros restaurant if you are in a hipster mood. Despite the fact that this is a Michelin-starred restaurant, there is no pathos or strict dress code. Instead, there is humor, lightness, and exquisite food that will explode your palate with a gastronomic orgasm. As the chef and founder of this restaurant, Mohammed Orfali, noted: “Hip-hop and haute cuisine do not really go together. But we managed it.”
(We will return to Orfali Bros soon). But if you decide to visit this place, be sure to try the scallop with black caviar on a sauce of black fermented rice. This dish will turn your world upside down!
By the way, the prices for a restaurant of this level are more than affordable—the average bill for two is $150.
If you are more glamorous and want to show off a new cocktail dress, go to Bisou, where famous brand chef Vladimir Chistyakov and chef Alexander Loshchinin combine French classics with the spirit of the Middle East.
In addition to exquisite and piquant dishes, this restaurant offers an extensive wine list which was named the best in the region. We recommend trying the octopus with ramiro pepper and tomatoes, which simply melts in your mouth.
The sweetness of the pepper and the slight sourness of the tomatoes perfectly set off the octopus meat, which goes well with Domaine Maire Cotes du Jura Chardonnay ’19, which has a delicate, fresh, perfectly balanced taste with a velvety texture and a long aftertaste with oak nuances.
