It took two years for Ulla Johnson's first store to open in Los Angeles, her third in the U.S. after New York and the Hamptons.

In West Hollywood, at 8823 Beverly Boulevard, in the former Stella McCartney boutique, the American designer has transformed the entire two-storey building into a true retail masterpiece. A chic and artistic oasis full of sunlight and natural textures, where the collections combine with sculptures and arts by amazing artists and craftsmen.
To mark this moment, Ulla Johnson teamed up with Los Angeles interior designer Kelly Wearstler, whose work at the Santa Monica Proper Hotel immediately appealed to her.
"Kelly and I both have a very established design language and a richly textured way of working, and there was a natural synchronicity," said Johnson. "Kelly is known for her incredibly layered interiors and an eccentricity of objects as well as a connection to local makers, so it was exciting to bring on board her unique point of view."

Designed with a quiet side entrance inspired by Parisian ateliers, the boutique leads customers into a spacious atrium that reflects the ambience of a large Californian home bathed in light.
At the center of the space, a sculptural center table is crafted by LA-based Ross Hansen and leads into a living-room lit by bamboo fiber lights created by Minjae Kim, a Korean artist living in New York. A lounge with vintage armchairs and a dancing table by Vincent Pocsik is the perfect place for conversation. Surrounding it are Ulla Johnson's colorful fashion collections, a vintage high-backed carved wood hall chair by Urano Palma and a 16-foot Brachychiton tree that joins the second floor through a mezzanine.

On the other side of the ground floor, the burl wood room presents the small leather goods and accessories collections on burl wood shelves. Canadian artist Jeff Martin adds two patchwork ceramic consoles, one of which displays the jewelry collection created in collaboration with New York-based vintage expert Kentshire. Continuing from the burl wood, a solarium opens up, surrounding a lounge and two fitting rooms with woven raffia fringe walls.
The staircase leads to the store's mezzanine, where a lounge awaits VIP customers. As on the first floor, every piece of furniture is coming from an artist, from the translucent glass table by Ross Hansen to the ceramic planter by LGS Studio and its designers Thomas Renaud and Noel Hennessy. The sumptuous fitting-room boasts the crème de la crème, with a bronze work by the talented artist Alma Allen.

Last but not least, the playlist chosen for the store, which features Mazouni and Serge Gainsbourg.
"Ulla and I share a passion for collaboration and her new Los Angeles boutique embodies our creative dialogue," said Wearstler. "The space embraces the natural world, timeless design from the 70's and 80's, and modern commissions from some of our favorite artists. It was important that the architecture and interiors evoked Southern California, which couldn't be better setting for Ulla's collection."
Following an opening night party this October, the Ulla Johnson store will host a series of ongoing events, including a talk series with guest speakers, rotating art installations and future collaborations, to transform the space into a cultural destination.
