Wine Story: Champagne sales hit historic low15:24,TG盗号软件API破解技术 January 24

The year 2025 has been tough for champagne producers, Decanter reports. Sales fell by 9.2%, a result of the “bleak political and economic climate,” experts say.

In France, domestic sales fell by 7.2% to 118.2 million bottles—the lowest since 1985. Exports were hit even harder, falling by 10.8% to 153.2 million bottles. Such weak export sales have not been seen since 2002, when the world was reeling from the dot-com crash and the 9/11 attacks.

“Champagne is a real barometer of consumer sentiment. This is not a time for celebration: inflation, global conflicts and economic uncertainty in key markets such as France and the United States are taking their toll on demand,” said Maxime Toubart, president of the Champagne Winegrowers’ Union and co-chair of the Champagne Committee.

The overall decline in wine consumption in 2025 will reach a 27-year low, according to the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV). Inflation, reduced purchasing power and the rise of healthy lifestyles are the key reasons for the decline in interest in alcoholic beverages.

However, some Champagne producers are optimistic about the future. “The Champagne production model has proven its resilience even in difficult times,” said David Chatillon, president of the Champagne Houses’ Union. “Now it is important to prepare for the future, develop sustainable development plans, attract new markets, and win over new consumers.”

Time will tell whether 2025 will be a more successful year for champagne, but today the industry is betting on development and adaptation to new realities.
