An international team of scientists has found that regular consumption of matcha, a powdered green tea, can improve emotional perception and sleep quality in older adults with signs of cognitive decline. The work is published in the journal PLOS ONE.
Matcha, a traditional Japanese drink, is made from whole crushed tea leaves, unlike regular green tea where only an infusion is used. Due to its special growing conditions and rich composition, it contains more antioxidants and caffeine. In Japanese culture, matcha has long been associated with meditation and attention to rituals, but now scientists are also trying to study its possible effects on brain health.
The study, led by Professor Kazuhiko Uchida, involved 99 people aged 60 to 85 with mild memory impairment. The subjects were divided into two groups: one took capsules with the equivalent of two grams of matcha daily (roughly like a traditional tea ceremony), while the other received a placebo. The study lasted 12 months, after which the participants underwent tests on cognitive ability, emotion perception, sleep quality and daily activity. Additionally, positron emission tomography was used to assess changes in the brain.
It turned out that those who took the matcha had improved emotion recognition from facial expressions, as well as improved sleep quality. However, there were no significant changes in other cognitive areas or in the ability to cope with everyday tasks.
