With costs continuing to rise across the retail landscape, H&M has become the latest fashion giant to introduce a charge for returning items online. It now joins retailers such as Boohoo, Zara, New Look, and Uniqlo in customers having to pay for returns.

H&M will charge £1.99 to take back items that are not damaged or faulty – either in stores or by post. The cost will be subtracted from the customer’s refund but can be avoided if they sign up to H&M’s free membership loyalty scheme.

The move comes after a surge in the cost of delivering and processing returned items combined with increased use of the service.

H&M confirmed it had begun charging for returns in the UK and was already doing so in a number of other countries in Europe. It plans to introduce charges to more markets in the coming months.

However, some other major retailers, including M&S and ASOS, continue to offer free returns.

Returns have become a major headache for retailers and a massive cost with returned items often ending up on markdown. And the number of items being returned post-pandemic has surged. During lockdowns, shoppers got used to buying things like loungewear that's less likely to have fit issues. But as a social life and work life has returned to normal, they're buying more items like dresses and ordering several sizes and styles, with the bulk of the order therefore likely to be sent back.

Figures show up to half of clothing bought online is returned and Al Gerrie, CEO of digital retail returns expert ZigZag Global, told fashionnetwork.com the move by H&M came as “no surprise”. He expects to see paid returns grow in the run-up to the peak season of Black Friday, Christmas and the January sales.

He added: “We’ve seen more of our retailers exploring paid returns options as they look to recoup some of the costs of returns. What’s also interesting is our data shows that consumers are still willing to buy from a retailer if they charge for returns - promising signs for H&M.

“Interestingly, our latest shopper research also shows that over 70% of 18-25 year olds are also happy to accept store credit to shop again if it is offered.”
