Plastic surgery has grown in popularity almost exponentially in recent years. However, as we know, all procedures come with risks, but one in particular is especially dangerous—92%.
According to a study by Overnight Glasses, eye color surgery, which includes cosmetic iris implants, laser pigment removal, and kerato-pigmentation, tops the list of the 10 most dangerous plastic surgeries. Patients risk their vision, as recovery times range from one to eight weeks and the average cost is $12,000, reports the New York Post.
Kerato-pigmentation, which is not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, uses a laser to create a tunnel in the cornea to place colored pigment.
A French company that trains ophthalmologists to perform kerato-pigmentation shared footage last year of a woman who transformed her brown eyes into bright blue in a clip that has racked up nearly 30 million views on TikTok. However, experts have long warned of complications from the procedure, which include vision loss, blindness, glaucoma, and eye inflammation.
UCLA clinical ophthalmology professor Dr. Colin McCannell told Healthline that he thinks it’s a “bad idea” to have “any unnecessary eye surgery” because of the risk of complications.
Thigh lifts came in second on the Overnight Glasses list, with a 78% risk of complications like blood clots, infections, and changes in skin sensitivity.
Celebrity-favorite Brazilian butt lifts (BBLs) came in third, with a 38% risk. Problems that can arise include fat cells entering the bloodstream and traveling to the lungs or brain, infections, nerve damage, swelling, and scarring.
