A collaboration between Zaha Hadid Architects and Bureau Cube Partners has won a competition to build a new Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade. The project envisions the redevelopment of the former Milan Vapa factory with dramatic architectural features that culminate in a central atrium, writes Hypebeast.
The creative approach to adaptive reuse seamlessly blends modern additions, mostly glass and metal, with the building’s original brick and concrete character.
One of the 20th century’s preeminent engineers and a close associate of Thomas Edison, Tesla laid the foundation for alternating current (AC) electrical systems that supercharged the last era of the Industrial Revolution. Like the visual language of design, Nikola Tesla’s discoveries represent a transition between pre- and post-industrial.
Spherical arches, featured at the entrance and throughout the building, frame the three-story atrium, further emphasizing the shape of the glass roof. The ground floor houses exhibits of historical artifacts, interactive displays, and a rotating program of temporary exhibitions. Perhaps the highlight of the experience is the Tesla Transformer Gallery, which houses a 12 million-volt transformer.
Finally, the museum's exterior includes an expansive public space featuring paths, gardens, and plazas designed to visually reflect the concepts pioneered by Tesla.
