The extent of the issues in the UK fashion retail sector can be seen not only from the retailers themselves but from results coming out of their logistics partners.

Wincanton is a major player in the UK supply chain system, handling deliveries for fashion retailer New Look, homewares giant IKEA and supermarket major Sainsbury’s, among many other high-profile retailers. So how is the business performing in these tougher times?
Well, in its Q1 trading update on Wednesday it admitted it is seeing lower delivery volumes for the three months ended 30 June, citing “a challenging external environment”.
The meant group revenue in the opening quarter was down 4.5% year-on-year, excluding “closed book transport contracts”, and down 10.4% year-on-year, including closed book transport.
It underlines the challenges being seen at many businesses both online and in physical stores, desire the much-talked-about bricks-and-mortar recovery in recent periods.
And what about Wincanton’s outlook? Well it seems to be reasonably upbeat, saying it’s “well-placed to continue to navigate the challenging external environment with its successful strategy and continued investment in automation technology, underpinned by its diversified customer base.
“The group maintains a resilient financial position with a strong balance sheet and consistent cash generation.”
